Google to consider ranking sites by mobile friendliness

google announced this week, they were going to begin tagging sites based on their mobile friendliness.   with the the ever-growing use of the the mobile device for surfing the web, the “masters of the google-verse” believe these portals should be better served. here is a little snippet of what they have to say about that;

“we see these labels as a first step in helping mobile users to have a better mobile web experience. we are also experimenting with using the mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal.”

the badge will be awarded based on whether or not they comply with what has become some of the de facto standards of today’s mobile user-experience preferences. a mobile-friendliness test was created to test whether or not your site meets these criteria:

  • avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • uses text that is readable without zooming
  • sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped

but don’t start freaking out just yet,  google has not yet begun implementing any of these rankings. so be in the know, that the future is coming and if your site doesn’t fit the bill, then you might consider getting in touch with your web professional.
